My name is Paula Duyon and I'm a reading teacher at Moose Hill School. You may have heard of me from my visits to your child's classroom, where I've introduced the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program (LiPS). I will be working with children, continuing the LiPs program and implementing the Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program, along with other supplementary programs and materials to support the classroom reading program. Our ultimate goal is to help students develop a love and appreciation of reading and to become life-long readers.
Parents often ask, "What can I do at home?" One of the cheapest, simplest, and oldest tools has been proven by research to be the best way to teach children. Children who are read to on a regular basis have a larger vocabulary, with which to understand the teacher, and a longer attention span, with which to work in class. While you are reading, your child is listening. Listening comprehension feeds reading comprehension. You are pouring into your child's ears and brain all the sounds, syllables, endings and blendings, that will make up the words that he/she will someday be asked to read and understand. And through reading stories, you are filling in background knowledge necessary to understand things that are not in your child's neighborhood. In addition, read alouds:
- Condition a child's brain to associate reading with pleasure
- Inspire imagination
- Provide a reading role model
- Create a closer bond between you and your child
The best investment you can make is a commitment to read to your child every day. This investment can be as little as fifteen minutes a day, but will pay big dividends in your child's future!
