Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Londonderry School District is excited to be piloting the Houghton Mifflin Harcort’s Math in Focus math curriculum in some of our classrooms in Grades K-5 this fall. Math in Focus is an authentic Singapore Math® curriculum which includes problem solving and real life examples as the center of math learning. It includes concepts with various learning modes to support all learners. If you are receiving this letter, it indicates that your child’s teacher is participating in the pilot.
Because the standards will be taught in a different order you may notice differences between your child’s report card and that of a child’s whose math program was not part of the pilot. Those differences will be reflected by the standards assessed in each trimester. However, all students will be taught and assessed on the same standards throughout the course of the year. They just may be taught in a different sequence.
The Londonderry School District will be collecting feedback regarding Math in Focus to ensure the math program aligns with our current Londonderry College and Career Ready goals and expectations. We will be assessing the degree to which this program meets the needs of our learners between now and December. Our goal is for the new program to support our existing curriculum and learners. This program is currently being used with great success at our middle school in grades 6-8 as well as many surrounding elementary schools.
We are excited about this math pilot and the opportunity it will provide our learners with a high quality mathematics education that would complete a high quality math experience for grades K-12. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of your school administrators.
